Certified Public Manager Program Learning Portal

The Certified Public Manager® program is a nationally recognized leadership development program for public managers and supervisors. It includes 31 days of non-continuous classroom instruction, supplemented by homework assignments and open-book exams. Most participants complete the program in 18 to 24 months.

The Florida Center for Public Management at FSU is an approved provider of CPM training and offers classes around the state, typically on a contract basis to a variety of public and private organizations. Assignments are available on FCPM’s web portal. Learners log in to edit their student information and submit assignments and exams. Faculty use the portal to post assignments and supplemental materials, review and grade assignments, and track student progress. Administrators use the portal for student enrollment, invoicing and payments, and other functions.

CHALLENGE

The challenge is to replace an outdated web portal and course management system with a new system offering new and improved features and functionality to optimize the experience of learners, instructors, and system managers. However, the current system needs to continue to be maintained while the new site is being developed.

SOLUTION

In phase 1, CIMES took over hosting and management of the current site: maintaining a help desk, troubleshooting problems, automating certain processes, and making urgently needed updates. At the same time, the team is creating and testing the framework for the new redesigned site and configuring the new database.

In phase 2, CIMES will develop tools and methods for transferring data from the current system to the new system. The team will continue to enhance management tools for instruction, invoicing, billing, communications, and more in the new system.

In phase 3, CIMES will create a media center where students sign in to watch assigned films, redesign the student and administrator interfaces, and implement additional course and learning management tools to improve the user experience and make the FCPM-provided program more attractive to new potential new customers.
